Dental Assisting

If you're contemplating a career in dental assisting, you'll need to get educated, and you'll need to get certified. Certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) is recognized or required in 35 states, but don't think you can get by without getting certified.

Here's why: According to the DANB 2006 Show Me The Money Salary Survey, dental assistants who are DANB certified make more than those who are not certified.

This survey on salary variances in the dental assisting profession indicates that nationally, the median salary of Certified Dental Assistants (CDAs) is $16.50 an hour, compared to the median hourly wage of $14.74 for non-certified dental assistants. That's a difference of $1.76 an hour, up from $1.58 an hour just two years ago. The CDA differential is increasing faster than the rate of inflation!

In addition, the survey reveals that, on average, Certified Dental Assistants stay with the same employer for 9.3 years and stay in the dental assisting profession for 15.9 years. According to the latest American Dental Association survey, dental assistants stay with the same practice for an average of 6.8 years and stay in the dental assisting profession for an average of 12.1 years. In other words, CDAs stay in the field and with the same employer about a third longer than all other dental assistants.

Get certified, and bite into a lucrative and long-lasting dental assisting career.
