Health Care Administration

Health care administration is the management of resources, procedures, and systems that operate to meet patients' needs and wants in the health care system. As a profession, health care administration has been recognized for more than 50 years.

From the time the first Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) accredited graduate program was founded in 1932 until now, a master's degree has been recognized as the essential first step toward a career in health care administration. That's because health care administrators require a level of expertise and skills not normally attained at the undergraduate level.

There are more than 70 CAHME-accredited master's degree programs to choose from. Some health care administration programs offer coursework online, but all require some on-campus, group experience. Many accredited health care administration programs have executive tracks that feature curriculum specifically designed to accommodate the work schedules of those already involved in health care and other industries.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, health care administrator employment is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2014. Median annual earnings for health care administrators were $67,430 in May 2004; the highest 10 percent earned more than $117,990.
